Car enthusiasts from as far away as Australia will be rolling in to Eastern Ontario on May 28th for an estate auction that features over 50 different vehicles, many of them sought-after antique cars.
We have had a lot of interest from across Canada, the United States and abroad, said Theresa Taylor, the auctioneer for the sale. This is a large collection of both cars and parts, and it could mean the end of a long search for many car owners who have been looking to complete a car restoration project.
Over 50 vehicles will be auctioned, ranging from fully restored cars to parts cars, circa 1939 to 1992. There are also two tractor trailer loads of car parts to be auctioned off, including full engines, transmissions and accessories.
The cars and parts are part of the estate of Jim Small, a local businessman who was known as the The King of Cornwall Car Shows. A member of the Cornwall and Lancaster Car Clubs, Mr. Smalls passion was cars. He attended a car show pretty much every weekend, traveling to shows throughout the country. His dream was to collect one vehicle for each year he drove, with a special emphasis on the makes and models that he had actually driven himself. Each year would be a different project. In later years it was the 59 Ford, 59 El Camino and 73 Chev convertible.
Dad would want his collection to be distributed to people who shared his passion for cars, said his son Mark Small. The family hopes that people will find something in this auction to help keep the spirit of classic automobiles alive.
Jim Smalls favourite car was his fully restored 1955 Chevy Bel Air, and he protected it like a child... always in the garage, never in the rain. Always spotless.
The 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air is expected to be one of the highlights of the auction, says Theresa Taylor. This top-of-the line, fully restored Classic Chevy is one of the most desirable and collected Chevrolets around the world.
Another car generating significant attention is the 1939 Buick McLaughlin Special. This somewhat rare car is well loved for its large fenders, unique head lamps and distinctive art-deco grille. The auction also has a number of convertibles and later model cars. Some of the cars are in various states of disrepair, and are commonly referred to as parts cars. A car restorer will often collect two or more of the same car and use its parts to create a fully restored version.
We are receiving a lot of interest from collectors and restorers in several of the cars that
are currently not drivable, but are easily restorable, says Theresa Taylor. Two of the unique cars we are the 1955 Chevrolet Handyman Wagon and the 1957 Chevrolet Nomad. Only 6500 Nomads were built in 1957, so this is a very rare car indeed.
